Miami-Dade County has long struggled with the high cost of building materials.
A new report shows the average cost of Florida building materials rose by nearly 7% in 2017.
The cost of materials is currently pegged at $1,924 per square foot, according to the Florida Building Materials Association.
In Miami, home construction is a large and growing business.
The average price of a home has risen by more than 3% in the past five years, the group said.
The Florida Building & Materials Association, which represents manufacturers, suppliers, and home builders, is calling for the county to reduce costs by at least $200 million.
The county is considering more than $300 million in cuts, including eliminating its current cap on the cost of commercial construction.
The new report comes from the Florida House Committee on Commerce, Public Works and Economic Development, which is considering a bill that would provide incentives for manufacturers to move production to Miami.
The bill is expected to be discussed later this week.
