An average new home sells for about $300,000 in the U.S., according to a report by real estate analytics company Zillow.
It can go higher if you can get the right home.
For example, the average price for a home in an affluent neighborhood in the Washington, D.C., metro area is about $400,000.

According to Zillows numbers, the median price for that home in Washington is $541,000, and the average sale price is about half that.
New York City, Boston, Washington and Los Angeles are the other big cities in the nation with median prices over $500,000 for homes.
These three cities are home to several of the country’s most prominent business leaders.
